| Founded by Southern Oregon legend Peter Britt in the 1850s, Valley View Winery is easily the oldest and most established in the region. Located in the picturesque Applegate Valley in Ruch, their dog-friendly tasting room provides perhaps the most idyllic picnic spot. A handful of old wooden tables offer seating on their lush lawn with plenty of shade from large, old trees. Picnickers can look across acres of vineyards to the majestic mountains and hills that hedge in the Applegate River. On Fridays and Saturdays from 11 to 3, the tasting room offers a small selection of food, typically including salads, sandwiches, and a Pizza of the Weekend. The Anna Maria 2007 Viogner is a perfect picnic wine, with bright, refreshing tropical fruits, citrus notes, and a crisp, clean finish that would pair deliciously with a roasted chicken salad. The Anna Maria 2004 Merlot has black cherry and raspberry on the nose, a good body, and a nice acidic finish that would go great with a roast beef sandwich with strong mustard and horseradish. The Valley View tasting room is open daily from 11 to 5, and picnickers are welcome to bring their own food or order from their menu. You are encouraged to purchase wine by the glass or bottle, and some soft drinks are also available. |
