Two things run year-round, regardless of the weather, with an efficiency unheard of in any other industry. One is the U.S. Post Office. The other? The Ballard Farmers Market.
When and Where?
Every Sunday Ballard Avenue shuts down for five hours to welcome hundreds of people shopping from local vendors that make the trip from all over the state. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. and continue right up until closing. If you’ve ever tried to park in Ballard during the market, then you’ve probably experienced the woe of having to travel several blocks to find even an inch of space.

Consumables
What would a farmers market without great food be? Probably just a market, and it certainly wouldn’t be as enjoyable. The traditional market goods are available, including fresh vegetables and fruits, some amazing cheese and a host of local meats. There are also several restaurant stands selling things like massive vegetable quesadillas and cheese-stuffed tamales.
Nonconsumables
In addition to local creameries, local butchers and a very interesting homemade vinegar stand, the Ballard Farmers Market is also home to a variety of craftsmen and women with everything from wooden jewelry to locally grown, fresh-cut flowers. The market is worth a walkthrough to soak up some of the artistic skill on display without all of the delicious things eat.
Too Hot to Handle, Too Good to Put Down
My favorite booth was home to Zane and Zack’s World Famous Honey. A good friend of mine had been telling me about an amazing chipotle sauce that he had purchased from Whole Foods, and lo and behold it was Zane and Zack’s. The Honey Chipotle sauce will make anything you spread it on taste good. We’ve tried numerous vegetables, crackers and even put in on an egg sandwich. The Habanero Cream Cheese was another winner, especially if you’re looking to heat-sanitize your mouth.
