Have you ever been to a restaurant and wanted to order dessert first? That's how Project Open Hand got the idea for their annual event—Dessert First—where not only are you eating dessert first, but that's all you're eating! This event provides residents in and around the Bay Area with the opportunity to support the community and experience decadent desserts from some of the area's best dessert chefs.
Project Open Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides grocery deliveries and daily meals for local San Francisco and Alameda County community members with terminal illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and breast cancer, and seniors who are homebound and critically ill. The organization was founded in 1985 by Ruth Brinker with the mission to meet community nutrition needs for everyone, "regardless of their race, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disability or ability to pay" (Visit the Project Open Hand About Us page to learn more).
This year marked the 11th Annual Dessert First event and showcased 16 dessert chefs from various fine-dining restaurants. The event also features savory hors d'oeuvres, cheeses, cocktails, wine, port and coffee to balance out the array of sweet treats. The chefs featured at this event did a phenomenal job of presenting their elegant desserts, and also provided a well-rounded menu of yummy goods for both chocolate and fruit-lovers alike. The creations featured attracted many community members, and raised significant funds for a good cause.
