Delta Café Vs. Screen Door
The best showdowns are those most precisely matched. Here, we threw two Portland restaurants specializing in southern food into the ring, each preparing a southern-style scramble. Screen Door presented its Cajun Scramble with green onions, bell pepper, andouille sausage, cheddar cheese and onions; and Delta Café served up its Southern Scramble with green onions, andouille sausage, crawfish, bell peppers, celery, onions and garlic.
Delta Café is a charming spot in the Woodstock neighborhood with a chipper wait staff, retro tabletops and sweet tea served in 32-ounce mason jars. Despite the scent of eau de bleach wafting around the joint, the scramble tasted good – good, but uneven. If it weren’t for the andouille sausage, this scramble would have been downright bland.
Up at 24th and Burnside, Screen Door’s eggs are cooked part-way before adding tasty cheddar, which makes for fully integrated cheesy goodness. Piled high, Screen Door’s very generous scramble is buttery and a little spicy – just like good southern lovin’ should be. Winner of the Cajun Scramble Showdown: Screen Door!
Note to bacon lovers: Screen Door also cooks up a side order that is nothing short of rapture – Praline Bacon. Bite into the sticky, sweet, tangy, spicy and nutty flavors on a bed of bacon and you’ll be transported straight to bacon heaven.Tammy Lynne Stoner is a writer, foodie, painter, Law & Order junkie, lover of striped shirts and Fiction Editor for Gertrude Press.
