When most people tell you about the foods they ate constantly during college and find themselves frequently craving after graduation, it’s usually pizza from that one late-night place, the 24-hour wet burritos they’d eat after a night out (another college favorite of mine), or the best burger on campus.
But, for me, the food I miss most from my college days is a Yumm Bowl from Café Yumm in Eugene, Oregon. Perhaps some of you have experienced the magic of the Yumm sauce—a craveable, delicious sauce made from a secret mixture of herbs and spices including garlic, lemon, brewer’s yeast, garbanzo beans, nuts and oil. The result is a creamy, flavorful, savory sauce that makes almost anything you put it on so much better.

My favorite thing at Café Yumm is one of their originals, the Yumm Bowl, which is made with layers of brown rice, beans, avocado, cheese, cilantro, salsa and Yumm sauce (basically it’s a burrito in a bowl). It’s delicious, it’s craveable, it’s made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients and it’s healthy. Oh, and it’s totally affordable, talk about the perfect college (or anytime) food.
When I was writing for the Oregon Daily Emerald in Eugene, I covered the small Eugene chain’s announcement that they were going to franchise. Since moving to Portland after I graduated, I have eagerly awaited for Café Yumm come to a location near me.
First, Café Yumm came to Beaverton, which was closer than Eugene, but still not very convenient for me to get to from my NE Portland home. Now Café Yumm has finally arrived near downtown Portland, near Portland State’s campus—where I can feed my Yumm sauce addiction more easily.
You can also find Yumm sauce for sale at several local Portland grocery stores, including New Seasons.
