Editor's note: This is the second part of a four-part look at Detroit's Eastern Market. Stay tuned for Part 3 next week! You can read the first part here.
As I opened my car door, the aroma of barbeque beckoned so clearly I could almost see a cartoonlike hand in front of me, curling its finger at me to follow it. And I did, practically floating the three blocks to the main strip of the Eastern Market. The barbecue scent set me down safely at the corner of Russell and Division in front of Bert's Market Place, where I found white plastic tables clustered around giant half-barrel grills cooking up hamburgers, chicken and ribs with a healthy portion of the jazz music Bert's Market Place is famous for. I piled my plate high with charred meat and enjoyed a delicious lunch before checking out the food vendors of the market.

Eastern Market, like most farmers markets, is ripe with vendors sampling their fresh fare from salsas, cheeses, sausage and, of course, fresh produce. I like to take a little nibble of something new while the farmer who grew it tells me how to cook it in ten different ways. Some market favorites are the popcorn truck and the recipe oil vendor who showcases his product by sautéing it with mushrooms.
And if the markets samples and street food aren't enough, the surrounding streets are lined with delis, pizzerias, bakeries, and restaurants offering up unique fare from the ethnic melting pot of Detroit. Check out the market directory for something to tickle your tastebuds.
What's your favorite place to sample street food?
