Finding a great local farmer’s market is one of my favorite things to do on any trip. Not only is it a great way to check out locals in action (and see what they like to buy), but it’s a great opportunity to sample fresh, local produce from the region you’re visiting.

That’s why on a recent trip to Palm Beach County, Florida, I made sure to make my way down to the Green Market in downtown Delray Beach. While market season in the Northwest runs from spring through fall, the market season in Florida is almost just the opposite, usually running from October to May.
Downtown Delray Beach is a quaint seaside town, and on Saturdays during the season, the Green Market takes over a few of the downtown blocks lined with shops and restaurants.
Delray’s Green Market was started in 1996 by the Community Redevelopment Agency, and today it has become one of the most popular and charming aspects of the season in downtown Delray Beach. This year, the Green Market opened on Saturday, October 31, 2009, and will continue every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through May 15, 2010.
There are stands at the market selling farm-fresh produce—during my trip in March it was mostly citrus, fresh greens, spring peas, radishes and more—fresh, crusty breads, farm-fresh (and multicolored) eggs, Florida seafood seasonings and sauces, fresh fish, artisan products and a few food vendors, including one selling fresh conch fritters.
There were also a few vendors selling multicolored glass dishes, palm frond hats and flowers. I went to the market early in the morning, just as the market was starting up and there were few people, but I could tell the market would be a more happening scene as the day progressed—there was even a band setting up and getting ready to play live music.
