The deadline for filing your 2009 income tax is fast approaching. The deadline this year is April 15, 2010. If you live in Illinois, you can donate directly to the charity Feeding Illinois right on your state income tax form. All you have to do to donate is check "hunger relief" listed in Schedule G on your form and then enter the donation amount on Line I. It's as simple as that. The check-off box for Feeding Illinois needs to raise at least $100,000 to stay on the state tax form next year.

Feeding Illinois is a coalition of eight Feeding America food banks. This coalition covers all parts of Illinois, from Chicago, its suburbs, and the north, central, and southern parts of the state. Ninety-five percent of each donation goes to support these statewide feeding programs which provide food to nearly 2000 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters that feed nearly 900,000 residents across the entire state of Illinois.
Feeding Illinois works by first collecting food donations from companies, government agencies, and food drives. Food is then transported by truck to food banks across the state where it is stored and distributed. Food banks send food to soup kitchens, shelters and food pantries where it then provides food assistance to people in need. A lot of people are in need in the state of Illinois. According to the USDA, 9.5% of Illinois households face food insecurity. The members of Feeding Illinois distributed nearly 85 million pounds of food last year.
Does your state have donation section on its income tax form? If not, what's your most creative way of helping those who are hungry?
