Jiffy Market -- Best Hot Sandwich/Best Atmosphere
If you’re looking for one of the saltiest reuben’s in Eugene, drive straight out Hilyard towards Amazon park to the Jiffy Market. Make sure you don’t drive right past it, because it is cozy and quaint -- and situated in a small inlet off of 34th and Hilyard, so it's easy to miss. Try whichever sandwich appeals to your taste buds hot off the grill, or cold, they're all good! Don’t forget to pair your selection with a cup of house-made soup, as well as an ice cold (and local!) pint of Ninkasi. If you like melts, try the tuna melt on toasted dark rye bread: smoky and crisp, and great with the works (pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, mustard and mayonnaise).
Barry’s Espresso & Bakery -- Best Lunch Deals
If you’re anywhere near the University of Oregon campus and are either in a hurry or simply craving a sandwich, Barry’s Espresso & Bakery can handle all of your sandwich needs and desires. Local and family owned, Barry’s serves anything from custom-made sandwiches on your choice of freshly baked bread to hot paninis and garden burgers. Barry’s egg salad sandwiches are especially delightful. Try this amazing treat on their famous challah bread, with deli mustard, crunchy pickles, juicy red onion, crisp lettuce, and lightly dusted with fresh ground pepper. Don’t forget to pair your sandwich with some of Barry’s homemade soups (switched up daily), as well as a delectable pastry for dessert--the Magic Bar is unforgettable!
The ‘Wich House -- Most Unique Creations
Even though a classic turkey sandwich can satisfy simple lunchtime cravings, sometimes we need something more on the wild side for the sake of variety. With their fresh focaccia bread baked daily and The ‘Wich House’s cured and roasted meats, your lunch is sure to make your day lively. Creations such as the Poached Pear ‘Wich (poached pears, candied walnuts, brie, and crispy greens) to the Turkey Caper ‘Wich (freshly sliced turkey, crumbly feta cheese, tangy capers, and lime-herb dressing) will throw your taste buds for a loop, reminding them that sometimes we need to add something extra to the ordinary.
Market of Choice -- Best Sandwich To-Go
On your way to enjoy an afternoon alongside the Willamette river? Want to enjoy a sandwich, some iced tea, and a good book in the park? Market of Choice is your best bet. Located in the deli section, the Market of Choice custom sandwich creations are sure to satisfy a variety of appetites, from gourmet sandwiches on herb focaccia bread, to simple turkey-provolone on wheat. Just walk up to the counter, fill out your custom-sandwich slip, and peruse around the store while the friendly deli chefs whips up your customized creation. Try the pesto mayonnaise: it’s sure to add some flavor to any sandwich.
Papa’s Soul Food Kitchen -- Best Southern Creations
Need a bigger, juicier and more down-South kind of sandwich? Try one of the many selections at Papa’s Soul Food Kitchen in Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood. All sandwiches are paired with Papa’s homemade potato salad, and go great with a pint glass-sized lemonade. Try the fried Catfish sandwich: served on a soft bun with Papa’s delicious coleslaw. For those who aren’t fans of seafood, there’s always the barbecued pulled pork sandwich or the jerk chicken sandwich! Pair your dish with one of the many local beers on tap, or choose from their long list of side dishes--yams, red beans and rice, macaroni and cheese--the list is neverending!
Campus Sub Shop -- Best of the Basics
If you truly desire a basic sub (and I mean basic), the Campus Sub Shop is the perfect fit. With only two breads to choose from (a white or wheat roll), your options are limited. But sometimes simplicity is what we need most. The menu is easy to navigate, with all sandwiches including pickles, peppers, oil & vinegar, salt and pepper, your choice of cheese, lettuce and tomato. Pair your pick with some of the sub shop’s refreshingly sweet and creamy frozen yogurt--and the endless selection of yummy toppings.
