Near the Friendly area of Eugene, you’ll find a hidden gem that’s been feeding both the diverse Asian population of Eugene and the local health-conscious community.
Owned and managed by a wonderfully welcoming Korean immigrant couple, Chang and Young Park, Sunrise offers up the largest selection of Asian foods, housewares and video rentals between Portland and San Francisco. Chang came to Eugene to be with family and purchased the store from his sister in 1991. He has since built up the business to include 13 employees.

On your first visit, you’ll be amazed at the vast array of products filling the aisles of the store from many styles of Asian cooking. Some of the items that may catch your interest range from Longanisa from the Philippines, Korean Kimchi, everything you’ll need to make sushi, Thai and Indian curries, and many types of noodles for all kinds of Asian dishes.
Asian food staples include meats (fresh and frozen), fresh produce, seaweed, rice, noodles, teas, ready-to-eat deli snacks and drinks, sauces and spices. Some items are so competitively priced that it’s definitely worth stocking up on staples like coconut milk and noodles from Sunrise.
Forget About Take-Out, Make It Yourself!
While catering mainly to the local Asian community for most of their 20 years in business, Chang notes that his business has seen a surge from Eugene’s healthy, gourmet-minded residents who are choosing to cook more ethnic meals at home to save money in a tight economy.
Are you in a hurry for a quick dinner? Chang’s advice is to grab a ready-made curry sauce with vegetables from the deli counter, add to your favorite sautéed meat and serve over rice for a quick Asian meal that will save you a bundle over restaurant fare or takeout.

There is also Yi Shen on 11th, but they have not really been the same since they moved to their new/current location. I have a feeling they are more enamored with this Vietnamese restaurant that they run inside the market.
Kings, also on 11th, is ok-ish, but the owner is a little bit cranky/unfriendly. The layout is not as good as Sunrise either. But I still shop there sometimes because they have a slightly wider range of Chinese foods/ingredients versus Sunrise which is more regionally diverse (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, etc.) but "thin" in each area.
