Eugene is known for its wide selection of vegan and vegetarian eateries. Some are good, most are great, but few are remarkable. Viva! Vegetarian Grill, located on 12th and Willamette, is one of the latter. Viva! is part of the food cart trend that has taken over the nation. Although they’re mobile, it’s comforting to know that you’ll be able to find Viva! in the same location, Monday through Saturday.
As you approach the cart, the smell of grilled tempeh and seasonings waft through the air. The menu is posted right on the front of the cart, and is simple and enticing. Viva! uses several local and organic ingredients including: Dave's Killer Bread from Portland, spices from Mountainrose Herbs, organic nuts and beans from Hummingbird Wholesale, tempeh from Surata Soyfoods, and Tofurkey. Walk up to the window and tell the friendly staff what you’d like, and have a seat under the white tent to the left while you wait for your order to come up.

If you’d prefer to enjoy your meal outdoors, grab your meal to go and take a walk around Downtown Eugene. Every option this veggie food cart offers is meat-free and 100% vegetarian. The most interesting aspect of Viva’s vegetarian menu is that it is comprised of dishes that typically include beef as the main ingredient: The Tempeh Reuben, The Polish Soysage, or The Vegan Philly Cheesesteak. The Polish Soysage (which is also the most popular) consists of caramelized onions & (optional) sauerkraut, toasted on a warm bun with your choice of toppings.
For dessert, try their 100% vegan softserve frozen yogurt, with flavors that change daily (keep track of which is being served on their Facebook page!) If you’re a diehard Viva! fan, you may also purchase a 12 oz. jar of their CheeSauce for only $5.75. Viva! Vegetarian grill stays true to Eugene’s reputation for having local, organic, vegetarian delights. Don’t miss it!
