| Off the beaten path in southern Klamath Falls is Mia & Pia's Pizzeria & Brewhouse, which is an absolute gem in the world of pizza and beer. Rod Kucera, brewmaster, says that one of the secrets to their great beer is the water; it comes from a shallow well in the Henley area, and he avoids messing with it as much as possible. Their rotating selection of about 20 different craft beers is brewed in a converted dairy that was once run by Don and Nancy Kucera, Rod's parents.
The Kuceras' pizza business started in Keno in 1987, and moved to Klamath Falls soon after, but they didn't start pouring their own craft beer until January of 1997. How they have managed to stay such a secret in the thirsty world of Oregon craft beer is a mystery, but there is hope that they will become more widely known after an appearance at a recent Southern Oregon beer festival. Their pizza boasts a great crust with a crispy bottom, soft top, and delicious ingredients that encourage rapid, noisy consumption. Try their Ragin' Cajun (Canadian bacon, bay shrimp, spicy cheese, and Pizza prices range from $6 for their simplest personal-sized pizza to $24 for a giant-sized specialty pizza. There are 12 taps, all of their own beer, and they will fill growlers, thankfully. A tasting tray with everything they've got on tap costs just $9. Share it with a friend, though, because it's generous. |
